I took my 2000 soft tail out for a long ride today and about 2 1/2 hours in to the ride my engine light started to come on and off towards the end of a 4 hr ride the light was staying on. i did a oil change a week a go. oil temp was 180 when i rode. does anyone know why this happened. when i idled down the light goes out. please help.
I have a 2000 Softail as well and experienced the problem that you are having. It could be a couple of different things, including but no limited to, bad TSM, faulty speedometer sensor, oil pressure sending switch, and others. I suggest you take it into your dealer/indy shop and have them check out the code/s it may be throwing. There is a data link connector under the seat that connects to a computer to diagnose the problem.
Start with the simple things first, and the first thing that comes to my mind is have you checked your oil?
Since you changed your oil recently, are you sure you installed the correct oil filter?
The next thing I'd replace is the spark plugs (if you haven't replaced them recently. They're cheap and you can save your old spark plugs in your tool box.
If those things check out, the next thing I would check is your battery.
If it's three or more years old, I'd replace it.
It may not solve this problem but at least you'll know that base is covered and you'll probably need one soon anyways.
If these things don't help, I'd suggest a trip to the dealership or your local indy to check for error codes.
On a 2000 model bike (depending on mileage) many things could make the check engine light come on, such as a bad voltage regulator, a stator, etc.
I'd also suggest that you change (or have) your intake seals replaced.
Good luck!
