I deal in joint checks all the time with my business. Again, you can find the exact pay off amount from HD Finance. (Have your bank call them-institution-institution) Have the pay off amount check cut to HD Finance & him. So he has to endorse it. If he owes less than what you are buying for, have your bank cut him a separate check. Or like someone else suggested, direct transfer & your bank cut him the balance.

Yeah, not knowing the guy personally, I'd say he doesn't touch the $$$.

Any Harley dealer will do a dealer assisted sale for about $200, the fee usually paid by the seller. I have done this and it works very well. The dealer takes care of all the paperwork and you are home free.

My dealer wouldn't touch it.

FYI-Harley Finance is VERY slow processing payoffs. It took me about 3 weeks to get the title to my street glide that the seller had financed with them.

I really appreciate all the great advice and wanted to give an update on how the deal finally went down.

We negotiated a price and then went to my local CU branch where we called HD Finance (on a speakerphone) got the payoff, routing number, account number, etc. Both the seller and I talked with the HD Finance rep and worked it out so that the title would be sent directly to me. Then my CU issued a wire transfer from funds in my account to HD credit for the full amount of payoff. My CU rep gave me a receipt of the transfer and said she would follow up as soon as the transaction had been completed on both ends.

So far so good. I have the bike with a bill of sale and should be receive my title from HD Finance in 10-14 days.

Thanks again for all the help and hopefully this will help out others in a similar situation.

Thanks for updating this! I may be selling a bike with a lien in the near future. Glad it's working out!
