Default RE: Disk Locks

I can't remember that I've set the alarm until it goes off and everybodies looking. A disc lock on my bike would be a disaster waiting to happen. And to think of taking it on and off of the back wheel???? It's tough enough taking the valve cap off and putting some air in. That happens annually.

On my Super Glide I can only put the disk lock on the back wheel. It's a pretty big lock (Xena) and it won't go through the little holes in the front disk; it has to go through the slots in the rear. But I think "tmitchellof PC" got it right -- if you have a wheel stall on your front wheel, you're going down. On the back there's a small chance of maintaining your dignity.

There are ways to remember it's on: The Xena will beep at me if I get on the bike without removing it. There are also bright orange cables that you can loop over your handlebars and lock to the lock. Somewhere else in the forum someone said he had a velcro patch that is either attached to the lock or stuck over his ignition so he can't put the key in.

I used a lock on my front rotor. Went on a rock climbing / camping trip to the North Shore on my bike. Left it sit covered all weekend. The last day I decided I'd go for a cruise before I loaded all my gear on it. Well...I forgot about the lock. I started to take off (with some authority) and the bike hopped a couple times before stopping. Didn't get going all that fast, but fast enough to damage the lock enough that I couldn't get it off.

Thankfully there were still a couple others around and I was eventually led to the little town's local handy-man who brought his generator and grinder over. Five minutes later....it came off. I lucked out. No damage to the bike or the rotor. Just lost three hours of my life.

If you use the disk lock...also use a reminder!!

I gotta agree with the people that have posted all the negatives....I'd be one of the owners that'd try and ride off with the damn thing still on the bike. Hell, 35 years ago, I tried to leave one morning on my 71 BMW R75/5 with the logging chain through the rear wheel and center stand...I'm still no better at remember crap like that...I gotta put Post-its everywhere...

As far as electronic alarms...How many people really take notice or react to an auto alarm when they sound off? Not many, most of us are just mentally saying, 'get in the car and shut that damn thing off'. Unless the alarm 'shuts down the vehicle', it's pretty pointless, IMO. And it doesn't do much for the guys that are gonna just lift up your bike, lay it on a trailer and leave. Gone in 60 seconds? If that. They're just gonna part the bike out anyway, a couple dings aren't gonna matter to them.

My 93 FLHS has the combo ignition/fork lock. It's all I use. If the bad guys want it, they can have it. I got over the 'someone's gonna steal my Harley' paranoia after a couple years of ownership. And...That's why I got insurance.
