Slight rattle = quick $160-$260 lesson learned
Excited about riding to work this morning. Excited about the bike, have a black HD Street Stalker front fender w/ factory paint (under $180 shipped!) ready to be installed and ordered a wide, clear windshield (with the dark 10", I was missing bumps/objects in the shade in immediately in front of me).
Heard a slight rattle in the right rear. Was pressed for time, figured it was something in the saddlebag or a bracket that could wait until I got home from my 70 mile round trip. Wrong.
Got to work, grabbed lunch, left the office and as soon as I'm going WOT on the on-ramp the bike gets LOUD. Blat blat blat and rolling off throttle the same. Still running great due to the T-Max.
Didn't want to stop, traffic would be bad enough, chance of recovery slim but I figured I knew what it was. It was LOUD riding all the way home...
Arrived home, looked, sure enough, the end cap and baffle was missing on the right side. Sent a text to my brother-in-law asking for the numbers of his in-laws in the same town I work.
Caught the Mother-in-law in time, her and the daughter recovered it! But the end cap is all messed up, baffle looks okay. Turns out I'm going to be up there tomorrow for Goodguys so that works out...
But with 5 minutes to spare before closing, there were NO V&H exact replacement caps online in the US, called V&H, ordered the part, $152 + shipping. Luckily I can swap the baffle and be whole again.
Unreal.
Morals and thoughts:
1. Always use locktite (I did)
2. Don't ignore rattles
3. If you think your bike rides too stiff, it does (calling Howard at MM for next softer springs on the Ohlins)
4. Don't rush and compromise when about to ride
Oddly, the slash tip on my Staggered Duals came off on a right hand on-ramp back in '03-'04 off the Deuce.
