General Topics/Tech TipsDiscussion on break in periods, rider comfort, seats and pad suggestions. Tech tips as they become available will be posted here.
I will be installing a DK Custom A/C on my 14 Fat Bob shortly and decided to go with the external crank case breathers. My question is, do these breathers spew the oil mist all over the engine while riding? I really don't want my engine coated with a fine mist of oil.
If this is posted in the wrong section, please move.
Here's how the Outlaw Breather Bolts work on a typical bike- the hot oily air hits the first fine mesh screen and breaks up the oil, then it hits the foam filter. The air passes thru and most of the oil gets absorbed by the filter, then drops down to the little reservoir and goes back into the head. The oil that makes it thru the filter hits the outer fine mesh and is broken up into a very fine mist.
After very hard riding in hot weather, there may be a light film on the air cleaner back plate and the rear rocker cover, but not enough to drip.
The filters on the Outlaw Breather Bolts do NOT hold oil, so it cannot build up to "saturation".
Every-time you put the bike on it's kickstand gravity will drop the oil out of the filter & reservoir and back into the engine.
The filters on the bolts should be cleaned every 5000 to 10000 miles, depending on conditions.
If you believe your bike is spitting more than the typical amount of oil, then a hose and filter system would serve you better.
Thanks Nitro, I will install them to see how it works out. Worst case, I will have to installed an external filter. I really don't see the need of a filter though, isn't the crankcase under positive pressure? So what's the point of a filter? My old Z-1 had a hose routed from the crank to below the bike and any drippings would just drip to the ground.

Its not a requirement to have the filter, but we do include the filter so you don't have to worry about oil splattering on your bike or oil in you garage or drive way.
