I live in Maryland and unfortunetly it's like one of the two states in the whole county that uses a larger version of a license plate.
I'm thinking about trimming it to fit a smaller (standard) license plate frame. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this and if so could they post a picture please.
We have the same problem in Canada. Our bike plates are the same size as yours. I used to cut mine down with a set of snips to fit an aftermarket plate frame. Never got hassled by the cops. Finally, the custom boys are starting to make nice chrome billet laydown plate frames to fit the larger plates. (they're not that much larger, just large enough to **** you off) If you'd like a cool chomed billet frame (they come in a number of styles) you can contact Barnes Harley Davidson in Langley, BC or Trev Deeleys HD in Vancouver. Ask for the "RPM billet licence plate frames. They run about $200 Canadian which is about $170 US
I took a pair of tin snips to mine and shaved it down to fit my chrome plate frame. As long as you leave crucial info readable, you probably won't get hassled. Remember, eveybody has a bad day now and then including feds so it might be an issue with some authorities. I have been followed by the cops many times in traffic and I think it's a non issue with most of them. Hope this helps in your delemma.
I took the snips to mine, but was careful not to cut into the numbers or letters. It's a tight fit and you can just barely see the stickers, but it's readable. Hopefully I will not run into anyone on they're bad day [:@]
Sometimes I wonder why I left VA... After double the tax rate, a safety inspection that was 70 bucks, and the MVA... Dear sweet Jesus, I hope I never have to go back there.. I think I will take FX's approach and head to HD of B'more...
Nothing wrong with MD, but man, some of the ways the state does things just does not make sense... A different size tag? GRRR. I am still on temps. Starting to get a little frustrated with the pace of things, but whatever.. Thanks for making me aware of it.. Hopefully going for a spin tonight!
Here's what I did on my Night Train which has a swingarm mounted tag assembly. Take your tag to Staples, Office Depot or wherever and copy the tag but reduce the size to fit your mounting. Once that is done have them laminate the copy to make watertight and bam your done.
