Seeing a lot of carbon soot in my pipes am I running to rich? I have an 06 RoadKing I just picked up from the dealer so I know they serviced it before I went out the door but I find the amount of soot odd.
On a carbureted engine, looking at the spark plugs can reveal if the fuel system is running too rich or not but, on fuel injected engines that trick does not work that well. Your best option in that case would be to get the engine dynoed.
Carbon deposits in exhaust pipes is a normal occurrence and is not a good indicator of a fuel system running too rich. Carbon will build up over time and can be influenced by fuel quality, octane ratings and air/fuel ratios. You can clean the carbon deposits with fuel system cleaner and a rag if they are bothering you.
Yeah it is fuel injected so I will get it put on the dyno this weekend. Thanks. Pulled the plugs and they are clean actually they were the first thing I checked. This is just a possibility given the vintage and symptoms described.
