OK guys, q#1, today I repainted my heatshields with hi temp. Went thru the curing phase. Got to were it says to take it for a normal cruise, (whatever that is) went to put in some more gas and when I took off the gas cap it had ALOT of pressure that blew out along with some gas..
I have never had a system pressure up like that. Don't think is normal...
Now q#2.. left the gas station and my shifter came off from down behind my primary. I messed with it for about an hour til I got mad and walked away. Am I gonna have to rake my primary off to get it back on. Thanks for any help
Answer #1:
Sounds to me like your gas cap vent and/or tank vent hose is clogged.
One, as fuel leaves the tank air cannot fill the void left by the fuel so a vacuum is created. When you take off your gas cap a rush of air will suck into the tank.
Two, as the fuel sits it gives off vapor increasing the air pressure in the tank. When you take off the gas cap the pressure releases.
First check the vent hose under the dash. A lot of times if the dash is removed and then replaced the vent tube gets crimped. Once you're sure that vent is clear, if you still have the issue try replacing your gas cap.

You may have better luck accessing the spline and shifter lever from the underside of the bike vs. the top. If it turns out you need to remove the primary it is no easy task. Get a service manual. There are many bolts, all different lengths and specific bolt tightening patterns. Personally I would get a quote from a shop and if it was in my budget I would go that route.
Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. As enodrano points out your tank has a vent, to allow air into the tank to replace fuel as you ride. It sounds as if that is either blocked or crimped. When you fill the tank with the cap off, the air in the tank can obviously get out easy-peasy!
Just checked the tank and sure enough, it was completely pinched.
And I looked thru my service manual and that seems a bit more of a job than I'm ready to tackle. Think I'll let the dealership handle that.
Advice is greatly appreciated.
