crank but no start...fuel issue. 2009 sportster 883 custom
I put my bike in storage 3 years ago. Was running when I put it away. I recently have gotten it out to clean it up and go for a couple rides this year. I just put a new battery in it. The bike turns over and has good spark and will also start if I spray starting fluid in the intake for a second. The fuel pump is kicking on and priming like it should. I tracked down every wire to make sure there wasn't any broken or bad connections. I don't believe the injectors are opening because its not getting any fuel in the cylinders. Not sure what tells them to open..what would cause this? I've been working on it for a couple weeks now and now I'm stumped, it also has freshg gas in it... Any ideas? 2009 Harley Davidson sportster 883 custom.
- Store the bike with a full fuel tank. An empty tank can build up moisture over time and any exposed metal inside a fuel tank will start to corrode (rust). This will cause the rust to be introduced into the fuel lines, filter and injectors. Fuel also evaporates over time so you may have to top off the tank periodically if it is stored for long periods of time.
- Fuel has a shelf life and will break down over time. The 10%+ ethanol in fuel can also deteriorate seals and gaskets when exposed for long periods of time. It is important to use a fuel stabilizer when storing fuel. The stabilizer will neutralize the ethanol and prolong the shelf life of the fuel, but remember nothing can make it last forever.
I think you problem is most likely fuel related. Most likely rust in the system or stale fuel. I would drain the old fuel from the tank and refill the tank with new fuel. You should also check for rust in the old fuel. Rust can reduce the life expectancy of a fuel tank and cause leaks. Rust could be in flake form or just look like sand or fine particles of dirt. Depending on the severity, worst case you have to replace the tank or have it re-lined.
Good Luck!
We'd be happy to get some STA-BILŽ 360°™ Performance out to those interested. In addition to helping with water, keeping the fuel fresh, cleaning the fuel system, it will also help prevent rust & corrosion - both above & below the fuel line.
Have a great day!
