Was wondering the same thing myself.......The Lower Mainland is a name commonly applied to the region surrounding and including Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Google is a wonderful thing..............

I googled it and got the same thing however, I have heard people from Michigan use the same term. Then there is also people in Great Britain also use the term Mainland...

People in Montana refer to everything except Washington and Oregon as "back east". I even heard it used when talking about California. Folks in Hawaii refer to the continental states as the "mainland". Alaskans use the term "lower 48". So I guess Alabama would be back east on the mainland in the lower 48.
