How can I tell if a 78 shovelhead is 74 or 82 cu in without tearing apart

Maybe this will help ya a little. Above this section is a sub forum called. Harley Davidson Motorcycles, down towards the bottom is a section called Classics and maybe you will have better luck there about your Shovelhead.

If it is a stock bike only the 81 to 84 model years (if you can find an 84, jump on it) were 80 cubes the rest were 74

There are websites that enable you to decode Harley engine and frame numbers, which should also give you the answer.

A 74" (1200) has 10 fins on the cylinder and an 80" has 9 fins,
also in 1979 mid year the 80" was made.
