NEWBIE of the year AWARD!
My very first Harley is a 1994 Dyna Convertible and I know jack squat!
I know that a soft tail has shocks and that a hard tail doesn't.
I know what "ape hangers" are.
I know how to change oil as long as I can get the damn oil filter off.
I have learned recently that you have to leave the choke out for a mile to get the engine running nice, on a Harley.
Everything else, I'm a blonde with longe fingernails and a poodle!
So please, if I ask a really stupid question, please remember that I am VERY new and need to learn! I may not be as lucky as some of you as to have a parent that had this stuff inbred into to their brains.
(And by inbred I mean nothing offensive!)
My First Question:
The different bike types....
I know what a Sportster is....the smallest bike of the Harley world...
...but what is all of the letter and name designations after that and what do they mean?
My Second Question:
What is the best thing to do to my bike (other than a tune up) after I get it to make it the best it can be?
I know I want to make it loud, and faster and more economic, but I don't know what to do when.
My Third Question:
What do TRUE day to day Harley riders look at when they see new riders and just put their heads down and think, "Holy ****!" What mistakes can a new rider such as myself avoid whether it costly or image?
My Last Question:
What is the BEST advice you would give to a first time Harley owner?
What have YOU learned throughout the time you have learned your Harley that you wished someone would have told YOU when you first got one?

2. Youd have to get pipes to make it louder, they arent cheap, even slip ons arent cheap, Make it faster there is a lot of things you can do, a Screaming eagle stage 1 kit is cheap & easy ,
3. Dont worry about it, be yourself, i would reccommend not dropping your bike infront of a lrge group of people thats embarassing
4. The best advice I can give you is have fun, ride the crap out of it, it will get scratched it will get dirty but who cares its all about the ride

4. Always put the kickstand down. Start it in neatral or with the clutch in. Most importantly........GRAVEL BAD.
Take an afternoon or evening and surf through the DIY section- read everything that catches your eye, not just tuning stuff. There's a load of info there and I've saved myself a lot of posting questions about things just by checking first to see if there is a topic on it.
Use the search function! Before you post asking what oil you should use, or if something will void your warranty, etc., do a search. Chances are someone asked the question already and got lots of advice about it.
#3 - Don't give a **** what others think or "see". I didn't buy my bike to impress anyone but me and I could care less what someone else thinks. That being said, take the advice of the others and I'd add watch where you park it. If you park it facing downhill, you're gonna get embarassed trying to back it out. If you're not on KNOWN, solid pavement, you might want to put something under the jiffy stand. Many a biker has come out to find their ride laying down after the kickstand dug into soft earth or even hot asphalt!
#4 - I've been riding bikes for years so I haven't 'learned' a lot of late. My first Harley was everything I expected; I already knew it wasn't a speed demon and was technologically behind most of the ricers and the other exotics but, I bought it for what it is, not what I thought it should be. Only thing I wish someone had told me before I bought one, was how addictive it can be to want to keep adding to and improving your ride to what you want it to be. But that's as much the Harley experience as the ride is. Ride safe and within your limits.
