Got a 2003 883 sportster bike is running and has had many upgrades/changes by previous owner. I can see 1200 casted into base of jug along with the HD. Problem im having is identifying exactly what heads are on it. How do you reference the casting numbers to part numbers?
Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. You can get part number info online at one of the parts websites, like this one.
It is quite possible that a previous owner has used 1200 parts to convert his 883. H-D sells a kit with all the necessary parts, but they can also be bought separately. As for casting numbers, they are just that. An unmachined casting can be machined to make many different finished parts and I don't know of any certain way of matching them up. If you can see an engraved or stamped part number, that will be definitive.
We have a Sportster section, where you can meet up with most of our Sporty owners, so do call in!
