Thumbs up 2016 Gas Cap Issue

Hey, all!

Just wanted to share this little tip with the folks who have suffered with the 2016 Gas Cap Binding issue. My wife and I both bought new Ultra Classics about 6 months ago. Super exciting buying your first Harley, you know? Well, around the second or third time we went to fill the tank, we noticed that the gas cap was difficult to remove and REALLY difficult to replace. It was so bad on my wife's bike that I could only get maybe 1/2 thread in before it would seize.

I talked to the local Harley parts department and they informed me that yes, there was a problem with the caps and that they were on a national back-order. I'm like, great. That doesn't help me right now.

Being the stubborn and impatient person I am, I went back home and took a close look at what exactly the problem was. After taking a few measurements, I came to the conclusion that the problem with the gas cap was the 3/8" lip molded into the bottom of the threads. This lip protrudes about 1/8" around the circumference of the threads and causes the binding of the cap on re-insertion.

A quick trip to the trusty bench grinder, a "little off the top" so to speak, and Voilŕ! The gas cap now works like a charm!

If you're struggling with a sticky gas cap and can't get one from the dealer, give this a shot. It works great.

Take care and God bless.

The dealers should have given you a replacement gas cap for free since the bike is under warranty.

Well, you would think so... But they kept telling me they were on national backorder. When I asked if they were covering it under warranty, nobody could give me a straight answer about it. I'm assuming it would be covered, but we'll see.

Anyway, it was a quick and easy fix for a rather annoying problem.

This issue should have been caught by Quality Control before motor got out the factory door. Disappointing but not a deal killer.

You are able to go to any Harley dealer and they have to honor your warranty issues.

Besides, what was wrong with a gas cap from a new motorcycle sitting on the floor? If they sell that particular motorcycle, they could always play musical gas caps.

Again, something I had suggested, but the local dealer didn't seem to be interested in going that route. I'm heading up there this weekend and we'll see what happens.

I had the same problem - very frustrating. My buddy rides a 2016 trike. We switched gas caps and his worked great in my tank, and mine worked great in his. Go figure??

Yea just like they should have caught the same issue on my wife's 2015 softail, but didn't. Turned out to be a bad weld job on the tank filler neck. They replaced the whole tank.

I took a Dremel tool to mine. You can also go to WalMart and get a Stant fuel cap #10834.
