In the state I live in, a dealership, BY LAW, has the option of charging a dock fee on vehicles. If even one customer is ever charged a dock fee, from that point on, EVERY SINGLE customer must be charged the SAME fee. There can be no negotiation on the fee. It is the dealer's choice on what to charge for the vehicle though.
I agree its a scam to squeeze a few more bucks out of you. They wacked me $85 document fee but I figured it was worth it for me not to have to deal with the numb nuts at DMV. If I had to take an hour to hour and a half out of my work day it would have cost me something close to that anyway and the overall cost of the bike was still the best deal I had seen after shopping for 9 months.
To me its like charging a portion of the dealer's rent and utilites for the time your bike was onsite. If he is going to charge me for his office help why isn't he going to charge me for his janitorial expense. Its all ridiculous.
I figure time is money. If you walk then you kill more time and money traveling to another dealer and shopping for a comparable deal and may have to compromise on what you want.
Its all an equation of time, money and my desire.
I have to admit sometimes these types of scams in life are so blatant and insulting that I cause myself much more trouble and expense because I cannot live with the insult. But I sleep better.
well I did it , crossed the river and went to a dealer in WI. Boy what pleasant experiene, compaired to what I was getting at dealers right in my neiborhood.First off,I got the price I was looking to pay as soon as I walked in the door. No sitting there hagling for an hour just to get down to msrp.This sales man explained all charges before he filled any paper work out.This dealer only charges $30 doc fee,which I had no problem paying seeing he was up front about it. Plus $30 sounds more realistic compaired to $199. I'm glad I took my bros advice and did a little driving to get much better service. The sales guy at MN dealer can thank the "office girls" for missing out on a sale all over the $199 doc fee. Oh by the way signed the deal on 05 RK black pearl. sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
Tell us the good dealer, and the bad one's names. I'll keep it in mind for when I'm on a road trip in the area, on who I will give my service business to.
elk river MN that dealer is a joke way over priced $1500 over msrp and if the sales man did'nt have the bike on the floor it's not the bike for you.Seems he didn't want to order anything, just sell what he's got on the floor.Before he even knew what color I was interested in he says "white is ultra gay" Not the thing to say if he has no idea what color I'm choosing. Then says " have to put on chrome lowers, everybody does" "have to change exhaust or It sounds like a honda" for all he knows I may like that sound. Then he bad mouths every dealer in the area saying all the mechanics at other dealers are "bone heads" and no way would he let them work on anything of his."bunch of young kids working on bikes and don't know what there doing." I'm certain all harley mechanics are well schooled no matter what there age may be. [:'(] Blaine MN dealer was better but, didn't want to negotiate the priceof the bike only could reduce set-up charges,delivery and something like 10% off acc. Man do they really try to push there acc. almost to the point it starts to **** ya off. Went to st.croix WI dealer way more of a laid back dealer .Don't want chrome acc. thats fine they don't preasure ya at all. Don't want ext. warranty thats fine they don't sit there and bust your ***** over it. All in all a pleasant experience at the ST.Croix dealer. Definetally will recommend this dealer to friends and will return myself. doc fee:
elk river=$199
blaine=$80-90
st.croix=$30 and up front about it.
I,ll post some pics next week. As it is to be delivered after the mufflers,stage I installed. they delivered for nothing, which is nice this time of year in the state of 10000 taxes.
Elk River sounds like a complete idiot. Forget about the color comments, he called it gay. Not to be P.C. here, but that jerk doesn't know if you, your son, daughter, or best freind is gay. Some people just deserve a beating!
I'm sure I paid it but I don't know where in the paperwork it was buried.
When I go to a dealer, I know I will get screwed one way or the other, I just feel better with the dealer that can do it without me really knowing it.
