Hi all, I wanted to get your opinion on an oil leak or wet spot under my bike. It is a 2013 Heritage Soft tail with only 2500 mi. on it. I am the second owner of the bike and I have had it just 2 months shy of 1 yr. The original owner treated it with tender loving care just like I do and it still looks like brand new. Even the saddle bags have no sag in them. Anyway,my question is should the engine have a wet spot and drip of oil coming from the cases? It sits a long time per the weather we get here in Pa. and I never saw it leak during the summer when I ride it regularly. Could this oil leak be from it sitting for some time or could it be major? I checked my '93 Heritage and it is dry underneath and my wife's '07 Dyna is dry as a bone. There is a paper gasket in between the cases and the bolts are tight. I also thought that the way the bike leans while on the side stand maybe a little oil came from the drain plug and ran toward the gasket and made it wet. This is my sixth Harley and none of the other ones ever did this. Jim
You really need to figure out where the oil is coming from.. It should not be leaking.
The cases should not have a gasket between them. They are sealed with only a case sealer.
It could be leaking from the clutch cable or may be simply from oil collecting in the cable sleeve from the last oil change. There is an oil passage that plugged with a pipe plug. It could be leaking from there.
Clean the bike well and check after a few days.. If you can't find anything, I guess you'll have to wait until spring.
Check the small rubber hose under the oil tank for cracks. Place a tissue underneath it and leave it overnight. If it stays clean, that's not it and you can remove it from the list.
mr. max makes a solid point! clean the machine well.
two aproaches:
paper towels to get a generic area
if you have a duster, talc the machine
sometimes talc will not stick well enough so you go to a big gun approach. find a shop the handles NDT supplies and get a can of developer and spray areas of suspect. this white power is sticky but washes off. NDT?? non destructive testing, used to find cracks in metal.
