Default Harley Click

I've finally gotten the dreaded click when trying to start my 96 fxdwg. And, so far, I've been able to file/sand out the pits and dirt on the plunger washer and from off the contacts within the solenoid housing itself. I know this isn't a permanent fix and, more than likely, will leave me stranded at the most inopportune moment.

I know there are two options I can do here. One is to replace the starter and the second is to rebuild the solenoid.

Those of you have rebuilt the solenoid, how long did the repair last?

Secondly, if I end up replacing the starter, does anyone have any recommendations as to one brand versus another? I have a stock motor with a Mikuni HSR 42 and V&H drag pipes.

Thanks.

Put a push button override near the starter.

The pushbutton is a good idea if it's a quality one. Rebuilding the solenoid results in a like new solenoid if you use a decent kit. If you replace the drive, you can get a Toyota starter drive for a car from a starter rebuilder for less than the aftermarket and they're rock solid.

Go to your nearest Caterpillar dealer and get a starter button. They're quality, and have a weatherproof cover. I've used them on tractors etc and they last. My old bikes are kick start only or else I'd have one on them too.
