Default Requesting old parts from mechanic?

Not sure if this is appropriate or not. I want to have my dealership replace my cam chain tensioner and internal cam bearings. Would it be appropriate to ask for the old parts? I can't be sure they would have honestly replaced anything. At least I wouldn't be able to verify the bearings. I don't know how trustworthy my dealership is or not but I've heard enough stories from experiences from various dealers around the country. This job is beyond my comfort level is why I would have them do it over the winter as they are already going to be storing it.

Thanks,
Denis

Why would you do business with a place you don’t trust?

But to answer your question, you have to every right to ask for your old parts. Probably should give them notice in advance so they don’t pitch them.

It’s customary at most dealers to ask if you want the parts back. So, just ask them. But, if you don’t trust them, I’d find another place for service.

Something else to consider,
A mechanic in a dealer will have access to a large number of used/broken parts.
Who’s to say the parts they hand you came off of YOUR bike.
Do you trust the guy behind the wrench?
If not, find a new mechanic.

It's not that I don't trust the dealer. I honestly don't have any reference as to trust them or not. Their google reviews are typical of any other business where people get a case of the a$$ over something. My comment comes from so many other people describing bad experiences with other dealers around the country. Just knowing that it is appropriate or acceptable to request the old parts is what I wanted to know.

I also get a 20% military discount from this dealer which is a nice perk.

In many states it's the law now ... They have to give the old parts ( core charges apply ) unless you specifically decline during the estimate / billing process

Basics here, no reason you can't ask for them it is your stuff after all you paid for it. You needn't give a reason nor feel guilty about it either.

Only exception to this would be warranty issues then they need the parts for the paper trail the moco requires which sometimes goes back to the factory but mostly to the dumpster at a later date

I would ask around there’s probably an independent that can do the job and be below the 20% discount.

worked as a gm wrench and it was standard procedure to hold parts for the customer unless he refuses when the service ticket was written. so ask for them, may be and may not be the parts from your machine, all about honesty of the shop.
