Exclamation What's the fix

for my tail light on my 05 Deluxe. I have a lot of slop in my front brake lever. While riding the tailight flashes a lot. I can push the lever forward to keep it from moving and the light will stay on like it should. Anyone have the fix for this ? Thanks

Default The fix

I would start with a new bulb. Then check the brake light switch and the ground. That is where I'd start. Maybe some others have some soultions.

Your master cylinder may be gunked up, preventing the piston from returning all the way to its normal position.

Indeed! Sort out the hydraulics first, as that may cure the taillight problem.

super-duper +1
that is where the return spring is. typically there is a snap ring, washer, packing, plunger push rod, plunger with bore seal and then spring.
just as soon get a kit.
if the lever is too floppy, it may be possible to slip a wave washer in there. do not get too rough with it or it could crack the perch.
now to get funky, you could add dirt bike anti-rattle springs.

Is there slop in the lever and pin? 1st thing to check before diving in to hydraulics.

Master cylinder probably needs a rebuild / replace if the lever is loose. The end of the brake light switch might be damaged also if the play don't seem that excessive.

Default Fix

Just fixed this on a buddy's 2006 Softail he inherited from his dad.

Loosen up the screws holding the control on the handlebars enough to remove the master cylinder and brake handle. Squirt some cleaner (we used windex) on the plunger. It has a rubber boot on it.

Wipe it off really well several t

Wipe it off really well several times then spray some lubricant on it that is safe for rubber. Work the plunger in and out to loosen it up. You should notice it moving easier right away.

Reassemble and test it out.

Simple procedure and there are several YouTube videos that walk you through it.
