Default Clutch Cable Question

I have a 1984 FXR, early 1984 with an Evo engine.
I have the clutch plates adjusted according to the book.
When I try to adjust my clutch cable, it's at the end of the adjustment. Can you tell me why?
The cable is brand new manufactured by Barrett.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Larry

well if the release mechanism hasn't slipped over, it leaves a cable that is too long.

Larry,
I'm riding a 1985 FXRS myself. Bought her brand new in '85 and while I'm not a qualified mechanic of any kind, I do have a little bit of experience with them.
Couple of things come to mind. First...I learned the hard way that ANYTIME I'm having anything "quirky" going on with the clutch "feel", or clutch adjustment it's a really good idea to open the cover on the right side of the transmission and make sure everything is OK with the right side push rod, the "throwout" bearing and the clutch release finger.
If you had more than that on the adjustment before installing the new cable...you shouldn't have "lost it" due to the cable replacement. I've had something like that happen to me, and what I did was just release everything..go back to square one and re-do the procedure. If nothing works...it might be time to pull the clutch plates and get a "thickness" measurement on them to see if it's time to replace them altogether.
Hope this helps. Maybe a real mechanic will chime in.

pulling the pack will be a waste of time. your suggestion is release and start over is spot on.

When adjusting the clutch with the clutch adjuster screw run it all the way in so it fully bottoms out. This will ensure that the clutch finger is in it's starting position. Now you can adjuster the clutch per the manual.
