Default Loctite use questions

Hello all,

I own a 2004 Heritage Softail and have a few questions regarding Blue Loctite and it's use.

For example, I will be installing my engine guard and saddlebag guards this weekend. While reviewing the Harley Davidson online installation instructions, it gives various torque specs throughout. It does not specifically say anything about the use of Loctite. Also, when I review my 2004 service manual, it also does not state anything about the use of Loctite.

But yet if I watch Youtube videos or read forum discussions in regards to the installation of something Harley, typically the individual will bring up that they use Loctite when securing or torquing a bolt and it is usually Blue Loctite because you can undo the fasteners with hand tools. I also saw the Harley Davidson website sells the various Loctite products.

Is there a rule of thumb regarding when and what to Loctite on our Harleys? If so, is there a specific way to apply the Loctite to a bolt? For example, do I coat the whole bolt with Loctite or maybe run a single line down the entire shaft of the bolt?

I also see they have another Loctite color, Red. It is my understanding this is only used for bolts you would not normally take apart as you need heat to do so.

I specifically purchased Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242 in what appears to be a small red tube. From the packaging, it looks like it will dispense from the tube like a super glue and will be blue in color.

Thanks!

It's a Harley. Use at least the blue Loctite on everything that you've taken apart or added to the bike. A small dab running about a quarter of an inch at the end of the bolt being installed/replaced will suffice.

I have switched to Loctite 243. It is the same strength as 242 but is tolerant to a certain amount of oil contamination.

Most people use the adage that metal in metal use Loctite.

Blue is safe on most parts. Red on engine parts I believe but haven't had to use it, you'll have to heat up to get it loose.

Only use Loctite if you want to keep things from falling off your bike.

^^
That's for sure. Was in Arkansas in the twisties and went to downshift, no shifter peg. Limped off the road and walked back 2 blocks to find my peg and bolt. Loctite them back on and on my way!

Do not use it on small fasteners on maintenance items that have gaskets on your Softail Derby cover, primary cover or cam chain case. The gasket spring will keep it tight. Just recheck after the first heat cycle. Do not use it if you buy new bolts and it has a locking coating on them. It is a special spherical cell that breaks when assembled and is not compatible with Loctite.

Most fasteners also in aluminum will stay tight on a Softail. Red on compensator nut and drive pulley if you get that deep. Use Primer T also there. Blue on brake rotors.

When I got the bike, I was adding an engine guard and couldn't break the bolt. Rode up to Harley and he used a "creme brulee torch" to heat and loosen.
Who knew Harley techs were so refined.
