Any advice please,, i got an ex police roadking 07
Before we start please excuse some of my language /wording, not to tech savy.
My bike has starting issues.
Sometimes (it seems to be happening more frequent) it wont turn over. I can tell you the relay in fuse box clicks but thats about it, if bike left for time(maybe 10 minutes) it seems ok, when it does all work the whole cranking system sounds strong.i have cleaned and checked all the conections thst i can see
Any ideas please

How old is the battery ? Charge it up and have it load tested , most places will do it free . Sounds like the battery is getting tired .

When things start going strange, ALWAYS check the battery and have it load tested.

If it's more than a few years old, change it out anyways, piece of mind!!

Are you pulling in the clutch? Police bikes are wired to require the clutch be engaged in order to start, whether it's in neutral or not.

The next time you experience the issue , take a volt meter and measure the voltage on the single wire going to the starter , Unplug that wire , ignition on , hit the start button , you should be getting 12+ volts , if not could be a faulty relay or even possibly a regulator heading south , once it cools down , it works .

Corrosion can build up on the starter relay , on pins of connector or even inside , could try replacing it . If voltage to the starter is consistently at 12v + , you should be ok .

Once you know the battery is good , test the voltage . With ignition off , you should be at 12v + , ignition on , still above 12v . Hit the start button , your voltage should not drop below 10v . Idle up to 2000 rpm should be in the high 13.9 - 14.5 range , not over 15v .

Check and clean ( electrical contact cleaner ) any and all connectors . voltage regulator , stator , fuses , relays , tps and map sensor .
You probably already cleaned and tightened your battery cables , but also check the cables running inside the jacket , could have corrosion built up and causing weak voltage / ground .
Just ahead of the battery , there should be a ground pole , just below the base of the gas tank , clean that as well , along with any wires connected to it . My 10 has a pole , one on each side .

Another thing you should look at is your iac , not related to your issue , but cleaning it along with the butterfly and seat will sure help it run smooth . There are lots of videos out there on how to do it , easy .

When the bike does start , if it runs great , then I wouldn't expect coil issues or charging issues with stator or regulator .

Check your bike for error codes , most of the time it will lead you in the right direction .

Not a stupid question , has me thinking that the battery is not the issue , but it's still good to rule out , if it's older and not kept on a battery tender it might need to be replaced . Weather can definitely play a factor in life time .

Another thing you might want to try , is give the start button a shot of electrical contact cleaner . It just might be loosing connection intermittently .

Start with the easy stuff , connections , testing voltage , then go deeper into it . If the battery test good , then I would expect a wiring issue ( corrosion , loose , break ) or relay , pay close attention to battery cables and ground connections , look for breaks and corrosion . The starter relay can heat up and be faulty if there is any corrosion inside it . After that I would look at the starter solenoid etc , especially if your getting 12v + to the single wire going to it everytime the start button is pushed .

How many miles on the bike ? If the fuel filter hasn't been done , you might want to consider putting a new one in , since your in the tank , change the hoses and regulator as well .

Good luck , keep us posted with your results .

Judging by the pic , it does look pretty rough . Since you have it apart , replacing those parts would be wise , not very expensive . You could also remove those parts and try cleaning the mating surface with a fine file , finishing up with some very fine wet / dry sandpaper . You definitely want both mating surfaces to be smooth , so when they mate , you get a solid contact . Usually , a bad surface is the result of a weak current going to it , causing the plunger to rattle / bounce , which causes arc welding on the two surfaces .
