Hello.I own an 06 Fatboy with 22000 miles. Its an injected model.I live in the NE Georgia mountains,so I get to ride some awesome roads! I have had the bike for a little over a year and have an issue I could use some advice on. About 5 time in the past year the bike just shuts down. Today it did it at 70mph coming down a mountain. Steady throttle and then it dies, No warning, no check engine light...just a dead engine. Pull in the clutch and it restarts and heads on! This could get dangerous. In the past it usually would do it when I was coasting, then try to give it throttle. A couple times there was a small puff backfire when it quits. .I might go a month that it runs perfect..No rhyme or reason and I cant make it do it! any ideas? I have been told that possibly changing the TPS might solve it? Bike is a stock 88 with stock exhaust. Thanks for any feedback.
It might be the TPS, could also be loose/dirty battery and ground cables or a clogged fuel filter. Have you checked the plugs and plug wires?
You should also check for codes: Harley Trouble Codes
Wouldn't hurt to pull your run / kill switch and check that , spray a little electrical contact cleaner into it and work it back and forth .
Another thing that comes to mind , would be the ignition switch itself , check the connector as well as the connection at the ign switch . Try running the bike and wiggle those wires around and see if you can get it to cut out . Sometimes the contacts inside the switch will corrode and cause poor contact . not sure exactly what switch you have , but some can be taken apart and cleaned .
Thanks for the replies. I have checked the battery, plugs, and wires and all is good there. The fuel filter has not been checked yet .I will pull the switch and clean it.That is a good possibility. The bike has no codes in the memory and never throws one when this shutdown occurs. Scared the **** outta me when it did that at 70 mph , and on throttle! Glad I wasnt on a Interstate.
