Default Side plate query

Hi all brand new member here from Liverpool in the UK. My question is mainly for the UK riders but ANY advice would be gratefully received. I've just got a brand new Iron 883 and the number plate we have to have here in the UK is damn ugly so i'd like to get a side plate fitted with a slightly smaller plate. Has anyone had any run in's with the law regarding having just a slightly smaller plate fitted, i'm not talking about the tiny number plates you can get just slightly smaller. The plate holder also has to be fold able as where i have to get my bike in and out of is quite a squeeze, again is this a problem with the UK authorities??
Does anyone have any recommendations for a fold able side plate? There's plenty on ebay but most aren't fold able and most look cheap and nasty.
Thanks in advance for any replies

Harley do one for the Sportster, but brace yourself for the price,

You can tell it's genuine Harley, because it says it's, 'Made in China' .

Available in chrome as well. They also do the same for the Dyna, so probably best to check with them so you get the right one. It's folds towards the rear of the bike. In fact when you first use it it will fold itself flat at any speed over 60. But as you continue fold it in and out, the little spring loaded plunger frees off and it will stay put. Just keep an eye on it for the first week.

Your other option is to look for a US take off

Which will be cheaper, but harder to get hold of. They turn up on ebay now and then, or you could check the classifieds on here. Someone might be binning one.

I've never been bothered by the law when using a side plate. If you dig down in to the Construction and Use Act (Motorcycles) side plates aren't illegal as such, however strictly speaking they should be mounted on the offside of the motorcycle. The Act then contradicts itself by saying as long as the plate is visible at an angle of 15*, x amount of feet from the rear of the motorcycle, all is well. You'd have to be pretty unlucky to meet the traffic copper who was familiar with all that.

I have pretty much always used a 7" w x 5.5" h plate on my Harley's, it's a neat enough size, but not small enough for the rozzers to bother about (touch wood). Plenty of people offering 'show plates' on ebay.
