Lockin' the SOB down. Advice on Disk/fork/whatever locks
General Topics/Tech TipsDiscussion on break in periods, rider comfort, seats and pad suggestions. Tech tips as they become available will be posted here.
Don't trust anyone is the key ! I had a bike stolen from me once and i don't like it very much. I was with 8 other bikes ,but i was the only Softail in the crowd. We parked right in front of a bar and i walked in and bought a beer and walked back to the door and it was gone. 70 seconds tops ! Locked up too. Point is if they want it they are going to get it. Do everything you can to keep it, especially while traveling.
In my case i bet it was somewhere close by in a van. Everyone went every direction with no luck. Screwed up my riding season for a while while waiting on a new bike to come it. SUCKS !
that is why i do no eye candy! i can park mine outside and it will be the last take and it will be for parts value alone. all my perks are where the eye cannot see, sorta like a cali cruiser, looks like shinola but will blow the martha white flour sack drawer of the guy who tries to get ahead. matter of fact, if you do not know hd, hard to say what mine is, no badges! i run in the stealth mode!
It is true that no lock can stop all theft and someone can defeat locks or just put a scooter in a truck and drive away.
But...
When I graduated from high school my parents bought me a Kawasaki H1 as a graduation present. I didn't have a cage license yet and wouldn't get one until the bakery that employed me
wanted me to drive a delivery truck. When I parked at UNLV, I would put a dog choke chain collar through the rear wheel. I didn't fear anybody would cut the chain or put my scooter in a truck bed
because of where it was parked. And that worked for a few months.
Until the day I was late for class and didn't use my 'security' chain; An hour later I discovered my scooter was gone. I always felt that someone had purchased a key and checked every day until
they discovered my chain hadn't been used and rode my scooter away. Sometimes even a minor attempt at preventing theft will be effective. Even if chains, locks, etc. can't stop all thieves they will stop some
and are hardly useless.
Similar to not removing keys from ignitions or door locks because that doesn't prevent all thefts or burglaries so why bother?
Years ago while riding through southern California, I pushed my Supergilde into the hotel room in El Cajon off 8 and shortly the manager noticed it wasn't outside the room and knocked on the door. When I opened the door he was not happy. But after speaking with him a little he calmed down and brought plastic to put under the bike to protect the carpet. His main concern was to not have stains on the carpet. Today, I don't think my Road Glide would fit through the door.
In today's world I suspect I would be charged for new carpet and paint, and most anything else they could think of. So be careful if you think it is necessary to do this. Some hotels have motorcycle specific parking, or will accommodate a few bikes parked near check in that is well lit, and under the cover if there is room to do so safely. And you
