Timing Off Perhaps?
I have a 1993 HD Sportster 1200. I have a backfire issue. When the bike is just idling, every once in a while there is a slight muffled "POOF" from the exhaust (not your standard Harley rumble noise - its a distinct backfire sound). When I am riding, while it is hard to hear with wind noise and what not, I don't hear any loud backfiring (when running at a constant speed), however, if the RPMS are up and I am throttling down (for example, immediately after a down shift) the engine will make a sharp "POP" through the exhaust (sometimes it will make 3 or 4, depending on the RPMs - the higher the RPMs, the more backfires). I also noticed, that in my garage in the dark and sitting at a stand still, if I give the throttle a good burst and let off I will achieve the same crisp "POP" and I can see a flame shoot out the exhaust. This flame is visible on both cylinders. I feel it relevant to mention that engine temperature doesn't seem to make a difference. I get the same response with a cold engine as I do with a hot one. I just got this bike a week ago and it has done it ever since I first test drove it. I would like to dig into this problem myself (I'm no dummy with mechanics but this is my first HD).
Suggestions? Advice? How To's?It's all good...Please help. Thanks!
