Can someone please tell me what newer year Harley-Davidson engine will fit a 2000 Softail Springer frame? I am contemplating buying a used 88 or 96 c.i. B engine, preferably a 2006, or newer that would fit my bike, which is carbureted and has a six speed trans. Is there any chance that Harley-Davidson would have a left over 88 or 96 c.i. new crate engine from around 2007?

A good parts person could help you. Compare the part number of your 2000 Springer frame with the part number of the frame that matches your target engine or range of engines. If the part number matches you can be a whole lot more confident that it's going to work.
I don't know that the MoCo is going to have a 2007 crate engine laying around, but you could talk to a dealer about ordering a crate motor to suit your 2000 frame. The 96 has a longer stroke so in theory is the better choice.. OTOH, I had an 88 that was treated to bigger jugs to become a 95. It had SE heads and upgraded cams (I never did the work and never did find out what cams were in it). It ran extremely well, and could lay a beating on my 96 inch Road King.
