Checked out a local Indy for a quote on a stage 2 from a stage 1 on my 2017 fatboy and was quoted 3000.00. Is this cam chest kit necessary. I thought most people here said around 1500.00 total
A lot of people do the S&S cam chest kit for the upgraded oil pump but it's not necessary. I just did a cam on my 2018 and replaced the pump with the newer OEM version oil pump. I think the pump was around $160 at my local dealer. The new pump doesn't seem to have many issues and is a lot cheaper than the S&S kit.
How much of the $3000 was for labor? Or is that all parts?
Unless you are going bog bore, no need for the cam plate etc. And as nickrat said, the latest OEM pump (upgraded form factory on later 2019 model M8"s) is the least cost option. The main components are the cam, lifters, cam bearing, gaskets and a tuner. If it were mine, I'd also replace the cam chain sprocket on the pinion shaft because they are typically loose on the shaft causing the cam timing to be off by as much as 3 degrees. The fueling sprocket is fairly inexpensive.
Runout on the pinion shaft must be checked while the cam chest is apart. If for some reason you needed a cam plate, I'd likely go with a Screamin Eagle cam plate and oil pump.
