I have a 2003 heritage softail that the fuel gauge only reads full. I've never dealt with the fuel gauges or had this issue before. I'm wondering if I could get any trouble shooting ideas. I also would like to replace it with an LED gauge. Not sure if that may fix the issue.
you probably have to pull the fuel gage out and see if there is something holding the fuel float. Get a service manual....it will show you how to remove the fuel gage/sending unit. As far as LED, can't help you there.

Reason: typo
They seem to work very good when new. My theory is the resistance changes on the terminals, for lack of better word that gauge travels over. Could maybe gently clean with solvent, maybe gently sand.
I could have done when fuel pump was out,but forgot.
I use trimoters, but I do like that they are crudely ball park
I think he meant tripmeters. Way more accurate than relying on these gauges.
To the OP: if you think you will replace it, then why go through the effort of trying to fix it? Then again, it may be something easy like some of the above suggestions.
Speaking of trip odometers, I reset mine to zero at each fill up. I track my fuel usage and have a good idea of how many miles I can travel on a tank of gas. When I get to around 200 miles, it is time for more gas. Trips usually add about 30-50 miles to the tank. I use an app called Simply Auto to track my fuel usage. So I have a fair idea of in town mpg and highway/trip mpg.
I guess this way if my fuel gage goes on the fritz, I have some "back-up".
