Definitely plastic inside. I'm going to trim down the spacers. The design just seems flawed. It's only designed to handle horizontal loading. It has little resistance to any vertical force (i.e. pushing down on top of backrest). Over time, you're going to get this.

Replaced stock 9/16ths spacers with 1/2". Ace Hardware had some nice welded seam steel spacers 89˘ each. Some Loctite and a few heavy turns and it's much better than before. A lot tighter. Appreciate the suggestions.
