Default Newbie Question!

I have inherited a 78 1/2 FXE and have a very simple question. The bike has a tank with two fuel caps. I am pretty certain that I add fuel to the one on the left (as your sitting on the bike). but wanted to make sure. Thanks for the help!

The 3.5 gal tanks on my old and gone 1979 FXE were filled
1) fill left first, replace cap.
2) fill the right - high side last, replace cap.

Having just acquired that shovel you need to go to the classic /shovelhead section of HD forums.
The members there are your best resource to learn about that classic you have. You have a lot to learn if you’re going to keep it and ride it.

Very nice pics. So it appears you’ve got a runner that has seen some love and not a project? If so that’s a huge advantage in sorting things out as you get familiar with your shovel. Congrats! Nothing made today sounds or feels like a shovel. Your local HD dealer is not the go to for service on a shovel. Heck, most won’t touch anything over 20 yrs old. Honda shops it’s like 10 yrs for comparasion. You can buy reprints of the original service and parts manuals. Great to have even if you not doing the “heavy lifting” service wise. Those manuals are educating if you dig into them.

As found. My sister in law alerted me that her coworker (widowed) wanted this OUT of her garage where it sat over 12 years. Actual milage was unknown. Thats a 1976 w/1978 1/2 80” engine…now its an 84” and a great runner.

Pic just after I put it my garage.

On its way for a resto/rebuild ad it needed way more than I was equipped to deal with. The Indy shop was able to start it but there was too much connecting rod play and many mysteries to sort out. Do not assume your local Harley dealer has the expertise to work on your shovel…Find an independent shop that does old motorcycles and has a solid rep. You’ll develop a relationship with the tech if they are like mine.

Everything was rebuilt except the transmission
