Hey everyone I just purchased a 1998 Sportster 883 and I dont know too much about them. It is in great condition, only 8000 miles on it. I am wondering though if thereare anyfluids or anything I should change before I start riding. The guy I bought it from had it sitting around for a couple years and only started about once a week. I am going to change the oil for sure but is there anything else I should do? Also there is a little white smoke when you start it and I am asuming that is because it has been sitting around for so long. Is this a problem? Thanks for the help. Any other advice would be much appreciated.
Suggest you get a Service Manual first thing. I'd check the battery, tires for rot and wear, change both oils (per manual) and oil filter, clean air cleaner element.
Get an Owner's Manual from your local H-D dealer too. Find a manual on eBay or bookfinder.com. Also, consider a Fix My Hog DVD (they're a sponsor here).
I assume you have an endorsement for motorcycles, but if not, take the MSF class asap!

Since the bike has been sitting for a long time I would do the 5k service on it.
Like One BlackFly said ,get a service manual and do it yourself or have a shop do it.
I think I would also put some fresh plugs in and drain the old fuel.
