You will look more like a "goober" if you have an accident or road slide with wearing just a Tee Shirt. Protective gear, helmet, gloves will serve you well should the road decide to meet your body.
However, to each his own.
Just tell me when you are going to have and accident or a car turn left in front of you and I'll tell you when you should be wearing protective gear.

Tucked in. I went on a ride with my shirt tucked in (first time) and it was nice not to fiddle with it from the buffeting raising it up.
