I've just got back into riding with a 05 Heritage back in May. I'm out of town a lot so I just got my 1000 mi checkup a couple months ago. I don't have a lot of time, or ability, to due maintenance on her myself, so I'm going to be a little depended on the dealer. I'm now at 2000mi, when do I need to take it back in for a check out? Also, what exactly will they do? do they check fluid levels, brakes, spark plug (for firing) etc. How often should I change oil(syn), it sits for weeks at a time, then gets riden a lot for 4 or 5 weeks. then sits again. I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me on this.... I hate being at the mercy of the dealers!!!
Your owners manual will answer a lot of your questions. The MoCo says change the engine oil/primary oil/and trans oil every 5K miles I believe. I like to do more frequent engine oil changes (2.5 to 3K miles) so I use regular 20W-50 HD oil. I change the trans/primary every 5K. I would recommend that you get a shop manual so that you are more familiar with the workings of your bike, even if you do not plan to do your own work. If you are anything like me, you want to know as much as possible about your bike. The owners manual will tell you what service needs to be done when, and the shop manual tell you how to do it. Hope this helps!

Actually you gave the answer already on some point's, if you are going to be dependent on the dealer other than the mile's you change your oil, which I change everything at 4000 miles, ask the dealer what they check when they do a service, I'm sure that they can show you a list of thing's that they go through on their inspection.

There's a service checklist in the owner's manual (well, there is in mine...European manual might be different to US?). Don't know what the rules are for you, but I was told to be careful about servicing while under warranty. If the service record isn't stamped by the dealer, you could run into problems. That's a real bummer if you have to pay UK dealer service charges!

In the US you can do your own warranty maintenance. Keep all receipts for oil, filter, etc. Document what & when you do the work.
