05 RK, Installed tac and started bike to test it out. bike has .1 of a mile on speedo. I have not riden this bike and it was hauled to my place in trailer as it is winter here. The rear exhaust pipe at the point it crosses over to the left side got cherry or glowing red in 2 mn of run time. Has anyone looked is this normal? It runs fine, could it be real lean on that cyl? This bike is completly new and stock. Start yours up and let me know. Thanks SK
Sure doesn't sound right to me. During cold weather I have let mine run longer than that to warm up, and have never seen it that hot. Is there a blockage on the left side? Hold you hand behind the left muffler and you should be able to tell. Other than that, I have no ideas. Maybe someone else will chime in.
That's serious! Don't run the bike. It never should get that hot. I can feel the burnt valves, blown rings and pitted heads and pistons now. Call the dealer and tow it back.

I have to disagree, most people dont notice because of the heat shields, and the fact that you normally dont look at the pipes that close. I would think that at night if you were to let your bike run at idle for awhile, you would prop see the pipe glowing. I would recommend using a digital thermometer and check the cyl. temp. Compare it with your buddys bike if possible. The rear crossover pipe produces alot of heat because of the lack of cool air flow there. If its running close to melt down, it would be making alot of 'popping', 'pinging' type of noises.
Two minutes of idle and cherry red? I've never seen that, even on a straight pipe bike, but I will look next time I fire it up at night. I still wouldn't run it until it was checked. Pretty easy to do, pull pipe to see if there is a blockage, and look in cylinder. Pull plug and inspect.
Started bike up again this morning, inside 55degrees. after 2 mn rear outlet glowing red, and after 3 mn front pipe from outlet 6 inches down pipe glowing, shut off shop lite and you could see very well, exhaust is comming out of both pipes so not plugged. The owners manuel says,Injected Twin Cam High temp idle, if the engine actually gets hot like riding in parade ect. when cyl head temp raches 320degrees the ecm gradually reduces engine speed, when reaches 338 the ecm richens the mixture to provide extra cooling, when reaches 356 degrees F the injector pulses are interupted and engine will miss. Now none of these have happened, went and talked to a couple dealers on the subject, they are getting a lot of complaints of the same. the reps have told them (and should be a service bullitan shortly) that the twin cam fuel injected, especially on a cold start is programed to run rich which lights up the pipes. Then when the temp sensor climbs it leans it out. Gee I hope the pipes don't warp lol. Anyway it is not good to idle these engines very long anyway and we will not run it anymore until we take it out this spring and break it in, A new engine is also tight which is contributing to the proplem. again check yours out and post what you see. thanks , Gee whiz we would hate to have melted aluminum all over my boots lol. sk Thanks for all the replies, sk Looking at the situation I think the best possible syn oil should be used to combat HEAT.
