This may be a stupid question, but as a newcomer to the HD world I have noticed that different models have a letter designation. For example, FXSTDI is a Softail Deuce and a FXSTBI is a Softail Night Train - it is fairly obvious that ST stands for Softail but what do the other letters mean? Another example is a FLHRI - this is a Road King but what do the letters stand for here? Or are they just manufacturer's codes. Anyone know?
FL=Touring model, wide 16" front tire
H=Rubber mounted dressers
R=Road King
T=Touring dresser
I=Fuel Injection
C=Classic, or Custom, depending on the application
CU=Ultra Classic
ST=Softtail
XL=Sportster
FX=Sport type big twins.(Narrow front tire) This term was first used in 1977 with the SuperGlide, Which was an FL with a XL Sportster front end, thus the FX.
D=Dyna
So FLHR=touring model Road King, FLSTC=touring Softtail Classic(Heritage)FXD(Dyna Super Glide).FXST Sport Softtail,ie Softtail Standard. It's not quite this simple, but that is the general idea.
