I was told by the HD store here that I could use the 6" over standard cables for my 11" rise mini apes. That doesn't add up. They're way more than 6" higher. I don't think these guys know what they're talking about. Does anybody else? Thanks.
Whenever I have changed bars, I measure the cable lengths 1 of 2 ways.
[1] I put the new bars on but leave the cables in place. I then mount the controls on the bars, hold the cables up and measure the difference from stock.
or
[2] I take a piece of wire or lawn edger string (whatever that stuff is called) and hold it from where I am going to the controls and measure the length.
With either of these methods I now exactly what fits, or at least what is too short or too long and go in between.
I believe the cables for my 8 1/2 " apes are +3". That's on a Road King. (different clutch cable routing and maybe even different throttle cable routing than bikes with fairings)
I put 16" apes on my 07 RK I didnt think +6" cables would be long enough. I had motion pro make me some that were +8" they worked okay but I could have easily got by with +6".
