OK, I've now gone through 3 replacement front speedo drive units ion the past 12 months on my '92 FLSTC. \\; One I got from the HD dealer - made in China. \\; 2 more I got from JP - made in China. \\; Each one was pretty much seized up when I took it out of the box, and I had to work with it a bit just to get the tab to spin around. \\; The last one lasted 40 miles. \\; Seized up, and tab bent. \\;
 \\;
There are apparently no sources for good quality ones left anymore. \\; They are all apparently junk now. \\; I'm running a Jims 6spd tranny, so I do have the port to install a speedo sensor. \\; Question is how would I go about doing that? \\; What sensor, and then what speedo to fit my console. \\; Plus, would there be any way to retain my self-cancelling turn signals?
 \\;
I'd really appreciate any help with this. \\; It's frustrating as all heck. \\; Completely junk parts - terrible quality.
The provision on the Jim's trans is probably for a hall effect type sensor for an electronic speedometer so it wouldn't be compatible with your mechanical unit. There really isn't a cheap way to convert it,what I'd suggest is to check the end play and spacing on your front wheel, i've replaced plenty of speedo drives with that made in china junk too,they did last plenty longer than 40 miles.
I clearly understand that the Jims tranny would take an electronic sensor that would not be compatible with my cable driven speedo. \\; That's why I asked which sensor AND speedo I would need, and why I asked how I could then deal with the self-cancelling turn signals since they currently work through the module under the console triggered by the reed switch in the speedo. \\; Same front wheel, end play, spacing for quite a long time. \\; Only started burning through drive units in the past year or so (after the first one failed, the rest kept failing). \\; Since the ones I'm getting brand new are seized OUT OF THE BOX before installation, I'm not surprised that they fail so quickly. \\; The initial unit always turned more freely than these crap units ever do. \\; The last one lasted 40 miles. \\; On average they've been lasting about 500-700 miles other than that one (and other than the ones that I was never able to "unsieze" out of the box prior to installation).
