My friend has a 1999 0r 2000 sportster and he had the engine cases chromed. No matter what he does or the shop that had the chroming does they can not stop the thing from leaking. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas before they have to strip that chrome and start over. Thanks all

ok i am an idiot. they are chrome rocker box covers. it is a 1994 sportster 883 with the 1200 kit installed by hd. the guy used chrome specialties covers and doesn't remember if they are specifically for a 1994. he keeps getting stock gaskets from "some guy that races sportsters" and is not sure they are specific for a 1994. can you use other years sportster's covers and gaskets and could this be the problem? is there a gasket sealer like three bond 1104 that would be good to use instead of a gasket especially if the chrome is shod? or should he just go back to stock covers with new 1994 stock gaskets until he can afford hd's chrome covers and hd installation?
I would remove the cover and check the sealing surfaces for flatness,a straight edge will work for this.It may be the covers are warped. You may be able to sand the surfaces flat. You will need a flate plate such as a steel plate or granite surface plate.Get some double back tape, apply the tape to the flat plate then place some silicon carbide sand paper to the tape.I would try some 220 or 180 grit.Place the cover on the paper and lap the surface in a figure 8 motion. This will flaten the surface of the cover(s).
Clean the cover well and torque the cover per the manual.
