I have an 06 XL1200L with Vance & hines pipes. It has the stage one intake and thats about it. I got the bike with 1000 mi. and the upgrades were already done. My Sporty runs great except for the fact that when I leave off the throttle it pops a little. I had the problem dam near solved and some how, it went the other way. I'm not a mechanical wizz so I am at your mercy. The air mixture screw on the carb has been exposed, so I've played around a little with it. Any help will be appreciated
I just purchased an `03'Road King and it is also popping,..worse with some brands of fuel.
The pipes are not stock. If the popping is fuel in the exhaust...with fuel injection is there a way to lean it out the mixture to control the popping?

Regards, My Sporty thanks you.
Popping out the pipes? You may be running too rich. What are your jet sizes? Take the air mixture screw gently all the way in then back it out 1 1/2 turns and then start from there. Remember, if you are adjusting your air misture screw, make sure the bike is warm and aroun 900-1K rpm. On CV carb (I think that is what you have) IN- leaner, OUT-more fuel.
Popping at the carb?, like in cough at idle, then you are lean. Go down in intermediate jet.
If your bike is popping on deceleration, you may even have an exhaust leak. Not common on your year bike, but you could take a look see. Good luck.
Dave, thanks, I will try your suggestions this weekend. I'm not sure of the jet size. I got the bike with the stage one intake kit already on the bike. Also the Vance & Hines, without baffles were on too. I have leaned out (screwed mixture screw in a quarter turn) and seems to have made a diffrence. Screw is now 1 7/8 of a turn out. Its not a drastic terrible thing, but I just want my Harley to run 100% you understand. On a limited budget.
Dave, you seem to know more than most so I will ask you one more thing. If I lean my carborated 06 Sporty, will I increase the engine heat? I was told I could burn the valves by leaning the carb.
One more Dave. Do you know any good ways to run cool. I have an after market oil cooler. I ride to work daily, 20mi. in 85+. I'm using 60 wt engine oil as recomended by the book. If I get on it a little (over 80 mph) my temp goes over 200 and that is not good.
Thanks for reading my reply. If you reply you can also send it in mail to nivram39@aol.com. Tahnk you again. "Keep the rubber on the road."
