Default Paint job help

I got some used sheet metal that already has paint on it. Want to do a custom job on this metal while keeping my original metal for later in case I ever sell the bike. I am prepping the metal by sanding it and completely sanding off the Harley decals. Before I prime and spray a base coat on it, was wondering if all I need to do is rough up the original clear coat before spraying, or do I need to go down to bare metal? A friend of mine is spraying it, and I want to take care of the prepping to save me a little coin. He is out of town for a while, so figured I would ask here. Thanks for any help from you all.

I'm shopping around some ideas to several painters and asked similar questions. Here's a response I got back from Michael at www.VisualImpact2.com . . . . . . . .

Patrick, Thanks for contacting me regarding you paint set. I have read over your emails and looked at the pictures. Let me try to answer some of the questions. First, the factory paint and clearing over it. There is no problem doing so. It was done a lot years back to customize bikes without going all the way and stripping the paint. I usually strip all my sets to bare metal and start over to make sure I know what is under the paint and to guarantee that my top coat wont "Fail". Sometimes you can get issues top coating previous paint work. The only real concern I have going over factory Harley paint is the fact that the factory paint is extremely hard. It concerns me a bit with adhesion issues but not enough to say I wouldnt paint over it. Also keep in mind that when you unbolt all the tins, you will see that there are marks where everything was mounted(usually chips and paint breaks). Normally not a big deal if you are stripping the whole set to bare metal but something that will have to be addressed if not. Just something to keep in mind.

FWIW...good luck.

Thanks for the info. It helps a lot. I have taken down to bare metal in the areas described like the bolt marks. Keep the beacon of Conservatism shining in your sea of Liberals, I am in the same seas. We will rise again my friend.

You can pick up some aircraft stripper at an auto paint shop which works faster than anything else.
