This is prob. more technical than you want, but there are two things I would do.
One, I would look for a website sponsored by a university or such. Google "home cleaning remedies" or something like that.
Secondly, I would call a company that does fire restorations and ask them what they use.
I would want to know what causes soot to bind to the metal and what would help it to relax or release. Personally, I have found a healthy dose of hydrogen peroxide (be careful of the paint) to be a miracle worker. Peroxide, if applied straight, doesn't even have to be dried off like water. It dissipates by itself.
I doubt that it will be as big a problem as my answer suggests, but just in case...
