Riding along this morning on the highway at 60 mph on my '03 Ultra Classic I pushed the cruise button to accelerate when all of a sudden the cruise control shut completely off. When it went out the turn signals also stopped working.
When I went to turn around and while slowing to a stop the engine died but started right up again and got me home.
After I parked it and turned off the ignition the speedometer went to 55 mph.
Found the accessory 15 amp fuse blown. After replacing the 15 amp fuse everything went back to working ok exept there is a check engine light for about 5 seconds after starting the engine.
Is there a code reading process to figure this one out?
Cruise control dropout tells you the last several events that discoinnected the cruise. They don't tell you there is a problem - but you can use them to see why the cruise turned off and deduce where a possible problem may be. For example if you hit the brakes, turned off a switch etc. it will tell you that. If you didn't hit the brakes and it said you did, you would be looking for why the brake switch signal activated. If the speedo went out with the fuse, there's your speed sensor trip.
Also, You cannot pull codes from the speedo lcd on an 03 model year bike. One question that comes to mind is have you had chrome controls or handlebars swapped out? Many times this sort of fuse pop is related to a pinched or rubbed through wire.
Thanks for input. I took it to the dealer this morning and the service department cleared the code and could not get a repeat code.
The Service Tech said since the 15-amp accessory fuse blew when I engaged the cruise control, that is was most like in that circuit but they could not find the problem.
The only thing that's been done on or near the handlebar switches is that I replaced the stock black screws with HD chrome screws. I thought I was careful and only replaced one screw at a time but maybe a wire got pinches.
Thanks for bringing that up, I had forgotten about it.
