Clammy, I'm in Toronto, so have the same rules as you. Had a BC Beanie, and though it looked cool, it offered no protection, and I risked tickets every time I was out. Anyways, about a year ago I had a 25 km an hour laydown on the Electriglide after hitting some construction debris, and skidded down the road. I was wearing a Bell, and it was destroyed, as was my jeans, leathers and about $1500 of chrome and plastic on the bike. My head was OK, but blood everywhere else. That conviced me to stick with the brand. McBride Cycle on Dundas Street West in Toronto has some great looking ones, flames or straight colour, that are pretty tight, and still are dot approved.
The NXT helmets ARE DOT approved, and when I tried one on last week, it was comfortable, and very light, as well as not too thick. It has good head coverage for a beanie (the one I tried came to about the base of my skull in the back). I still have a few months to decide, but I'm leaning towards one of those.
