Default Lids

I know it's still few months before I get my Night Train, but I figured it's best to start looking into things like lids, saddlebags, etc...

Anyway, the point of this is, as the title suggests, LIDS! Here in Canada, we have to wear one, and it has to be DOT approved. I want a beanie, and I've seen DOT beanies at the Harley dealer, but they're so padded that they stick out about 2 inches on all sides of my head. I can imagine these would be VERY prone to lifting at highway speeds, not to mention they just look bad. I found a company named Nexl Sports - NXT helmets website and they have low profile DOT beanies that appear to be what I'm looking for. So I was wondering if any of you have used these lids, and if yes what your opinions are. Do they live up to the hype?

Thanks!

Cheers!

Hi. I got a beenie helmet and it does feel like it wants to lift if I don't pull it down tight. My first helmet was an open face by Nolan.
While I'm a out spoken, strong supporter of choice, You need to ask your self one very important question. How much is your head worth and how much risk do you want to accept responcbility for.
Full face of course offer the most protection. with flip ups the most convenient. As for colors, I prefer refelective silver tape because riding home from work it's dark. Other then that, you can paint the helmet any way you want because fit is the most inportant thing.
Ride safe, ride defencively.

Well, I don't actually have the choice NOT to wear a lid. Plus it has to be DOT. I was really asking if what the site says - that their lids offer the same protection as a thickly padded DOT lid, while being much lighter and have thinner/better padding in them - is true.

I used to ride with a fullface, but when I rented a Wide Glide last year, it came with a beanie (which I now believe was non-DOT, as it was very thinly padded and didn't stick out as much as the ones they have now) and I spent a lot of time with my face in the wind... and I LOVED it! So I really don't want a fullface, or even a 3/4... it removes me too much from the whole experience... know what i mean?

Even if I did have the choice I'm not 100% sure I'd ride lidless... I would definitely try it out and see how it felt though.

Thanks for the comments!

Cheers!

Well, it turns out there's a place here that stocks the NXT lids, so I went over today and checked them out. They're exactly what they say on the website. They're comfortable, is almost as low profile as a non-DOT beanie, and about the same price as any other lid I've looked at. Also, the owner of the place has one, and she said she'd never use anything else, and has heard that from many of her customers too... keep in mind they sell much higher priced lids as well (including some thicker DOT beanies), and she didn't try to steer me towards any of those. So I look at that as a pretty good endorsement. I think I'll be buying one in the next few months.

Cheers!

I caught some pretty big bugs on the highway a couple of summers ago... when they hit in the face it does sting! I'll always wear a brain bucket because I have no choice, but I would likely wear one even if I did have the choice. I hope I won't get a rock in the face!

I'm not wanting a beanie for the looks of it, but because I really LOVE being in the wind! I will have a fullface, for rainy/cold, days too. I don't care what others think I should look like... as long as I'M comfortable, that's all that matters.

Glad to hear you got through that accident in one piece!

Cheers!

I love the look of a beanie but I wear a full face because I've seen too many people torn up by not wearing one. Yeah, the brain's are a little safer but the beanie won't keep the road from ripping off the nose. It's big but I like my nose where it is. In Texas we're not required to where a helmet. I know we're all destined to die but I don't want to speed up the process. I totally understand the feeling of being in the wind but, personally, I've got to weigh the good and the bad. Hope you stay safe no matter what choice you make.
