Default Paint Chrome Engine Derby / Timing Covers (How To?)

If I were to take a chrome engine cover (for example the Derby Cover) and paint a portion of it how would I go about prepping the surface and painting it? Specifically what I am thinking of doing is taking the Skull Theme I have on my bike and painting over the chrome or maybe only the black eyes of the skulls. Obviously I would need a fine paint brush to accomplish this task or mask off the entire area and spray it.

What type of paint do I need since it will get hot once on the bike? Do I have to prep the area by sanding it down first and if so, what type of sand paper would I use?

Thanks for the help.

You can't paint directly on to chrome. It's too smooth. Paint (and powdercoat) need something to grab on to, some texture. That is fairly easy to do, depending on what your goals are. You can use a little 120 grit sand paper, bead blast, or use some glass etch acid. Then just paint as standard steel.

To add to what Bob said...

You can use a little laquer thinner on a scotch brite pad to scuff the surface.

Then use some sealing primer or even better, self etching primer (same stuff used on bare metal).

Then paint your color. I don't think the derby cover gets hot enough to worry about high heat paint.

If you're just painting the eyes, well, then, you would be lucky to get all of this done to the little spots and some acid etch would be your best choice if your eyes are better than mine and you can control where it's going.

Like CW sed, it won't get hot enough to matter. I painted my inner and outer primary and they don't get hot enough to hurt cheapo rattle can paint. I usually scuff the chrome with some 180 or 220 grit, then primer it, then paint it.
