I'm trying to get an '88 FXRP back on the road. Down to the little bits. It's missing the gas guage. If the sending unit is good, will an off the shelf guage from Auto Zone work?
Check with Harley to see what Ohm your Sending Unit is,then you might find a guage compatible at your local parts store. It won't fit your tank you will have to make a bracket to mount it. " Good Luck "
Street, Thanks. I went to my service manual and found the specs of the sending unit and spent some time on the internet. Found iEquus gauges has a 2" guage for AMC cars which had specs (ohms) that were almost exactly the same as the Harley sending unit. 2" was a perfect fit and the gauge seems to work perfectly with a little fuel in the tank. Tomorrow I'll fill the tank and see what it reads.
By the way, this bike has been sitting for 5 years, put an old battery in it and it started right up.
It seems to be working. Put about another gallon in and the gauge went to the half mark.
The specs for the sending unit is 40 and 250 ohms. For the AMC gauge it's 33 and 240. So close enough, I hope.
However, I was going to suggest just going without. I had a brand new softail fresh off the showroom floor and the gas gauge didn't work from day one. I never bothered having it fixed.
