Potential Problem - Digital Oil Temperature Gauge 62955-09
Just a heads up in case you are planning on purchasing the 62955-09 digital oil temperature gauge. I purchased one for my wife's new Softail and before installing it I pressed the readout button. It would not stay lit unless the button was continually pressed. It would immediatley shut-off once it was let go. Obviously this is not correct as it should stay on for about ten seconds. I could not get it to go into extended lighting mode at all by pressing twice. I later went back to it and it would then work correctly. Shortly thereafter it would become intermittent again.
I then had the dealership send me a new one, (they are 125 miles away), and I received it yesterday. This one did exactly the same thing. Both of these have a date code on the package of 06-02-10. I called H-D Customer Service this morning to see if they have had any issues, but advised me they have not at this time. I can see one of these maybe being defective but not both. I have three of these on my other bikes and have never had a problem with any of them. In fact, I haven't even replaced the battery in any of them and two are eight years old.
Just make sure before you purchase one of these that it operates correctly. Try it several times to make sure it stays lit for the prescribed amount of time, one button push - about ten seconds, two pushes - about two minutes. I guarantee you if it is intermittent, but operates correctly several times in a row, it will still be intermittent later.
I did not want to crack this open to replace the battery, just in case they had a bad batch of batteries. H-D Customer Service advised if I wanted to try this I could without any return issues.
I also have one on my 09, love it. What does your read after a decent ride?
I was stuck in Toronto traffic a couple weeks ago, air temp was about 90 degrees F and the cylinder deactivation was working i believe, by the time I got parked in my condo it read 308 F, I am concerned the fuel map installed after changing the pipes and AC is way too lean.
On my hottest running bike, '08 Fat Bob 96 TC, on a hot day I get 237-241 with an oil cooler, which I think is still too hot. You are cooking your oil and engine, as well as creating deposits. I have never seen or heard of a temperature that high in one of these engines, though I am sure it can be done. I think you are running lean and hope you are running a synthetic oil.

That temperature range is completely normal. You are not cooking the oil and engine. It's the oil that's taking the heat build-up out of the engine not just the cooling fins. To the OP you may be pushing/ holding the button down a little too long on the gauge. Never had a problem with mine.
