78 sovelhead speedo breaking
I continue to have to put on a new speedo ever so often. No matter which one I buy they always seem to break. The needle bounces and when it isnt bouncing it still does not show the right speed. Any ideas?

There are 2 different speedos for these beasts. One is fed from the front wheel, and the other is fed from the transmission. They have different ratios. Transmission fed speedo is 1:1 and is for 1962 - 1980 FL, 1971 - 1972 FX, 1980 - 1983 FXWG. Front wheel drive fed speedo is 2:1 and is for 1947 - 1961 FL, 1973 - 1984 FX. If you get the wrong speedo, it will obviously read incorrectly. Also the Softails use an even different speedo, with a 2240:60 ratio. It will be about 10 mph off if installed on a front wheel drive 2:1 bike.
Usually when the speedo jumps around, especially a new one, it's the cable.
