The short version - I'm looking for a restore project that's not to much for a teenage son and his dad (that's me) to handle. We have maintained and done minor work on our dirt bikes, so a total rebuild is out of the option.
I do not know where you are located but out here in Or there are plenty of sportys for around 3500. If its a project then why does it need to be a 1200? The 883 is usually 20-35% lower in price. If you want older I have seen several Iron head (pre 86) Sportsters for under 3 grand even as low as 1500 sometimes.

I'm actually looking for two bikes:
a 1200 sporty or dyna or FXR for me to ride now (98/99 FXR, or 06-newer Dyna, or 03-newer sporty)
an older rebuildable or almost-restored bike for my son's senior project. (cheap is important)
